How to Winterize Your Plumbing

Winterizing your plumbing is essential to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting during cold weather.

Here’s how to prepare your plumbing system for winter.

Step 1: Insulate Pipes Use pipe insulation to cover exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and garages.

Step 2: Seal Gaps and Cracks Check for and seal any gaps or cracks in walls and foundations where cold air can enter and reach pipes.

Step 3: Drain Outdoor Faucets Disconnect and drain garden hoses, and shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets. Open the faucets to allow any remaining water to drain out.

Step 4: Keep Indoor Faucets Dripping During extreme cold, let indoor faucets drip slightly to keep water moving through the pipes.

Step 5: Maintain a Consistent Indoor Temperature Keep your home heated to at least 55°F (13°C) even when you’re away to prevent pipes from freezing.
